Following the arrest of Zhirayr Sefilyan and Vardan Malkhasyan by the National Security Service (NSS) for allegedly plotting a coup d’etat, a few hundred supporters staged a demonstration in their defense. For some reason […]

Via Bekaisa, there’s an account of a recent visit to Armenia by two Azerbaijanis and a Turk. As it’s in Russian, there’s thankfully an English translation. Anyway, it starts off interesting enough with their journey into Armenia from Georgia. As anyone who knows the route well will tell you, buses and cars from Armenia usually […]

Opposition Protest the outcome of the 2003 Presidential Election, Matenadaran, Yerevan, Republic of Armenia © Onnik Krikorian / Oneworld Multimedia 2003
I was pondering calling this post “Out of the Frying Pan,” for a moment, but decided against it even though next year’s parliamentary elections are shaping up to be the most tense in the eight […]

While most observers are not expecting any breakthough in continuing negotiations between Armenia and Azerbaijan to resolve the conflict over Nagorno Karabakh, RFE/RL carries what some might consider to be surprising news. That is, progress has been made after Kocharian and Aliyev yesterday met in Minsk on the sidelines of a CIS summit.
“I can […]

Armenia Now has an interesting if perhaps overly optimistic article ahead of the next scheduled meeting between the Armenian and Azerbaijani Presidents to resolve the conflict over Nagorno Karabakh for Tuesday. According to the article, a largely credible newspaper reports that gradual moves to implement a final peace plan are currently underway.

I’ve just come back from a quick drink with Tom de Waal, Caucasus Editor of the Institute for War & Peace Reporting, before he had to shoot off for some reception, and IWPR’s Armenia Country Director, Seda Muradyan. Beforehand, Tom launched the Russian translation of his book on the Karabakh conflict, Black Garden: Armenia and […]

RFE/RL reports that the Defense Ministers of Armenia and Azerbaijan have met on the tense border between their two countries in an attempt to ease tensions. Both countries are in a defacto state of war over the disputed territory of Nagorno Karabakh even if hostilities were not formerly declared. Dozens of conscript soldiers die on […]

Arminfo carries news that the South Caucasus Parliamentary Initiative (SCPI) has proposed to establish an annual Caucasus Day in Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia. I’m all for the idea given the fact that the three countries have a lot to offer each offer culturally and the need for mutual hatreds to be overcome. However, the idea […]
